Cold Laser Therapy
Low level lasers, or "cold lasers," are different than more publicized heat lasers that are used in many surgical procedures to cut and cauterize tissue. Low level lasers do not have a thermal effect and are used to stimulate, rather than destroy, body tissue. These types of lasers have been in use for over 25 years. Low level laser studies have been done and have proven to be effective in many cases. The ERCHONIA laser used here at Meridian Family Chiropractic was the first low level laser to gain FDA market clearance.
The low level laser emits visible coherent (focused) light that is applied to an affected area. Light energy passes through the layers of the skin and stimulates underlying tissue cells. The increase in intra-cellular energy results in altered physiological changes, including enzyme regulation that affects biological processes. This enhances tissue regeneration and repair. The overall effects are decreased pain and inflammation and increased range of motion.
